What Is a Ganglion Cyst?
A ganglion cyst is a fluid filled sac containing a jellylike fluid that originates from a tendon sheath or joint capsule. Ganglion cysts are a very common, benign soft-tissue mass. They most often occur on or around the wrist. However, they are also frequently found on the top or dorsum of the foot. Ganglion cysts may vary in size and they may resolve themselves over time.

Causes
For the most part it is unknown what causes a ganglion cyst. It is thought however to be a product of a trauma from a single event or micro trauma from multiple repetitive events. Symptoms include the formation of a lump or bump on the foot with a dull ache or pain with tingling or numbness in some cases if a nerve is involved. Also there may be pain or difficulty wearing shoe gear due to the cystic mass.
Treatment
Treatment of ganglion cysts. In some cases the ganglion cyst or cysts may just be monitored by a podiatric physician. If there is pain associated with the cyst especially when walking shoe modifications can be made to accommodate the cyst to offload pressure and friction and alleviate pain. Aspiration of the fluid and injection of a steroid has also been successful in some cases to dissolve the cyst. If all other treatments fail surgery may be needed to remove the cyst. However, in some cases no matter what the treatment the ganglion cyst may return.
